Why garden soil fails in pots, three potting mixes you can make from locally available ingredients, and how to prepare ground for planting.

Choosing the right potting mix for fruit plants matters more than almost any other decision a container gardener makes, and the single most common mistake in Indian container gardening is filling a pot with plain garden soil instead. It is free, it is right there, and it is almost the worst thing you can put in a container. Understanding why explains most of what follows.

Why garden soil fails in pots

In open ground, soil is part of a huge connected system. Water drains away sideways and downwards, earthworms keep it open, and roots range freely. Put that same soil in a pot and none of that is true. It compacts under repeated watering into a dense block, squeezing out the air pockets roots need to breathe. Water then either sits on top or channels down the sides without wetting anything.

A good potting mix has to do three jobs at once: drain freely, hold enough moisture between waterings, and supply steady nutrition. Garden soil alone does only the third, and not for long.

All of these use ingredients available at any local nursery or garden supplier. Measure by volume, not weight — a mug or a bucket works fine.

1. General fruit plant mix (use this if unsure)

  • 40% garden or red soil
  • 30% well-rotted cow dung manure or vermicompost
  • 20% cocopeat
  • 10% coarse river sand
  • A handful of neem cake per pot, to deter soil pests

2. Free-draining mix for mango, litchi, avocado and citrus

These dislike wet feet more than most. Increase the grit and cut the water-holding fraction.

  • 40% garden or red soil
  • 25% compost or cow dung manure
  • 25% coarse sand, fine gravel or perlite
  • 10% cocopeat

3. Moisture-retentive mix for banana, jackfruit and water apple

  • 35% garden soil
  • 35% compost or cow dung manure
  • 25% cocopeat
  • 5% coarse sand

Drainage: the part people skip

No mix survives a pot that cannot drain. Before filling, check that drainage holes are open and generous — a 12-inch pot wants at least three or four holes, not one token hole in the centre. Cover them with a shard of broken pot or a piece of mesh so mix does not wash out, then fill.

Raise pots slightly on feet, bricks or battens so water can actually escape rather than pooling underneath on a sealed balcony floor. This one change prevents a large share of monsoon losses.

Planting in open ground

For a tree going into the ground, prepare a pit roughly 2ft × 2ft × 2ft. Refill it with a blend of the excavated soil, well-rotted manure and a little sand, mounded slightly above the surrounding level so the plant does not sink and sit in a puddle after settling.

If your soil is heavy black cotton or dense clay, plant on a raised mound rather than in a sunken pit. A pit dug in clay behaves like a bucket with no outlet, and fills with water during monsoon.

Keep the graft union above the soil line. That swollen joint low on the stem must never be buried, in a pot or in the ground.

Soil pH, briefly

Most fruit plants are content within a soil pH range of 6.0 to 7.5, which covers the majority of Indian garden soils. You do not need to test unless something is visibly wrong. Persistent yellowing between green leaf veins on new growth usually means iron is locked up by alkaline soil — treat it with chelated iron and add organic matter, which buffers pH naturally over time.

Blueberries are the notable exception, needing distinctly acidic soil around pH 4.5–5.5, and will struggle in an ordinary mix without added organic acidity.

When to refresh the mix

Potting mix is consumed over time — organic matter breaks down, the level drops and the mix compacts. Once a year, ideally before the growing season, scrape off the top two inches and replace it with fresh compost. Every two to three years, repot fully into a larger container with new mix. Common questions

Can I just buy ready-made potting mix?

Yes, and for one or two plants it is entirely reasonable. Most commercial mixes are quite light, so adding about 20% garden soil gives fruit plants more anchorage and body. Mixing your own becomes much cheaper past a handful of pots.

Do I need gravel at the bottom of the pot?

No. It is a persistent myth. A gravel layer does not improve drainage — it actually raises the saturated zone closer to the roots. Open drainage holes and a free-draining mix throughout are what matter.

Is red soil good for fruit plants?

Red soil is a good base — it drains better than black cotton soil and most fruit plants do well in it. It is still low in organic matter, so blend in compost or manure and some cocopeat rather than using it alone.
