Product Description
About the Ruby Longan Plant

Ruby Longan is a deeply pigmented longan (Dimocarpus longan) selection, named for the warm, ruby-tinged colour found in its skin and, to a lesser extent, its flesh. It carries a richer, more concentrated sweetness than standard longan varieties, making it a favourite among growers who want the most flavourful fruit this soapberry-family tree can offer, alongside its close relatives lychee and rambutan, both already popular fruiting exotics in their own right across many Indian gardens.

Appearance & Flavour

The fruit hangs in generous clusters, with a shell showing a distinctive warm reddish-brown tone rather than the more common tan of standard longan. Inside, the flesh is juicy and notably rich in flavour, with a more concentrated sweetness than milder varieties, wrapped around a single glossy seed.

Growing Conditions in India

Like other longan varieties, Ruby Longan wants full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil, and adapts well to the warm conditions found across most of India. It is a relatively resilient exotic once its root system is well established.

Planting Guide

Allow 6–8 metres of space in open ground for this variety’s eventual broad canopy. Enrich the planting hole with organic matter, and consider container growing for the first several years if space is limited before an eventual move to open ground.

Watering & Feeding

Water deeply and regularly while young, then water as the soil dries once the plant matures. Feeding ahead of the flowering season, combined with allowing a brief dry spell beforehand, both support stronger fruit set and richer flavour development.

Pruning & Common Problems

Light annual pruning after harvest maintains a productive shape. As with other longan varieties, birds are often the main competition for ripe fruit, making netting worthwhile during the fruiting window if you want to enjoy a full harvest yourself.

Harvest & Culinary Uses

Fruit is ready once the shell turns its characteristic reddish-brown and comes away cleanly from the juicy flesh inside. Eat fresh for the fullest, richest flavour this variety offers, or use in the same fresh and dried preparations longan is traditionally enjoyed in across Asian cuisines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Ruby Longan different from other longan varieties?
Its distinctive reddish colouring and notably richer, more concentrated sweetness set it apart from paler, milder longan types.

Does Ruby Longan need any special care compared to standard longan?
No, its growing requirements are broadly the same as other longan varieties — full sun, well-drained soil, and consistent watering while establishing.

Can Ruby Longan be grown in a large pot?
Yes while young, though like most trees in this family it benefits from eventual open-ground planting as it reaches full size.

How soon does it start fruiting?
Typically within 3–4 years for a grafted plant.

Is Ruby Longan good for fresh eating or better dried?
It is excellent both ways — its rich flavour holds up well fresh, and it also dries nicely for the traditional preserved longan snacks enjoyed across Asia.

Does the reddish colour affect the taste?
Not directly, but Ruby Longan’s deeper pigmentation tends to go hand in hand with its more concentrated, richer sweetness compared to paler varieties.

Is Ruby Longan suitable for a home garden, or mainly for commercial growers?
It suits both very well — home gardeners enjoy it for its rich flavour and productive nature, while its qualities also make it a favoured choice among growers selling premium longan at local markets and specialty fruit stalls.
