Product Description
About the White Longan Plant

White Longan is a pale-fleshed selection of longan (Dimocarpus longan), a tree native to South China and Southeast Asia and a close relative of lychee and rambutan within the soapberry family. Its translucent, almost white aril has a milder, more delicate sweetness than deeper-coloured longan varieties, while still carrying the fragrant, juicy character the fruit is loved for across Asian markets and gardens.

Appearance & Flavour

The fruit hangs in loose clusters covered by a thin, tan-brown shell that cracks open easily to reveal pale, almost translucent flesh surrounding a single glossy black seed. The flavour is sweet but notably gentler and more floral than richer longan varieties, appealing to those who find some tropical fruit overwhelmingly sweet.

Growing Conditions in India

Longan grows comfortably across most of India’s warmer regions, wanting full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is somewhat more tolerant of cooler winter nights than lychee, making it one of the easier soapberry-family fruits to establish outside purely tropical zones.

Planting Guide

Allow 6–8 metres of space in open ground for a mature tree, which develops a broad, dense canopy over the years. Enrich the planting hole with organic matter and stake young trees until well rooted; container growing suits the plant for its first several years.

Watering & Feeding

Water deeply while the plant is young, then reduce frequency once established, watering as the topsoil dries. A brief dry period ahead of flowering can help improve fruit set, so avoid overwatering a mature plant heading into that season.

Pruning & Common Problems

Light annual pruning after harvest keeps the canopy manageable. Birds and fruit bats are often more of a concern than insect pests as fruit ripens, since the sweet, fragrant fruit draws plenty of attention — netting the canopy during ripening is the most effective protection available.

Harvest & Culinary Uses

Fruit is ready when the thin shell turns light brown and separates easily from the flesh. Eat the sweet, pale flesh fresh, or use it the way longan is traditionally prepared in both fresh fruit plates and dried form across South and Southeast Asian cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does White Longan compare in sweetness to other longan varieties?
It is generally milder and more delicately sweet, appealing to those who prefer a gentler flavour than deeper-coloured, richer-tasting longan types.

Can White Longan be grown near other longan varieties?
Yes, and doing so can even improve pollination and fruit set across all the plants involved.

Is longan easy to grow compared to lychee?
Generally yes — longan tolerates a slightly wider range of conditions, including cooler nights, than lychee typically does.

How long before a grafted plant fruits?
Typically within 3–4 years, much sooner than a tree grown from seed.

Is White Longan harder to find than regular longan?
It is a less common selection than standard longan, prized specifically by growers and eaters who seek out its gentler, more delicate flavour profile.

Does White Longan store well after harvest?
Like most longan, it is best eaten fresh soon after harvest, though it can also be dried for longer storage in the traditional way longan is preserved.

Can White Longan be grown alongside other fruit trees in a mixed orchard?
Yes, it grows well alongside other tropical and subtropical fruit trees, provided each has enough space and sunlight of its own, since crowding tends to reduce fruiting across the board rather than just for one tree, and good airflow between plants also helps keep fungal issues to a minimum.
