Product Description
About the Velensia Malta Plant

Velensia Malta is the well-known Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis ‘Valencia’), a variety grown more widely for juicing than almost any other orange in the world. Originally developed in the citrus groves of the Azores before spreading globally, it has become the benchmark juicing orange across major citrus-growing regions, prized for a rare combination of high juice content and long shelf life on the tree.

Appearance & Flavour

The fruit is medium-sized with a smooth, thin, bright orange skin and very few seeds, making it convenient to juice or eat. The flavour is a well-balanced sweet-tart, less intensely sweet than some dessert oranges but consistently juicy and refreshing, holding its quality on the tree for an unusually long window after ripening compared to most other orange varieties.

Growing Conditions in India

Valencia orange wants full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil in the pH range of 5.5 to 6.5, and adapts comfortably to the subtropical and warm conditions found across most of India. It is a reliable, relatively low-fuss citrus once established, tolerating moderate heat well.

Planting Guide

Allow 3–4 metres of space for an in-ground tree, or a container of at least 45 cm diameter with sharp drainage for terrace growing. Choose a sheltered, sunny spot, since citrus generally dislikes strong, drying wind while young.

Watering & Feeding

Water when the topsoil dries, avoiding waterlogged roots, and feed with a citrus-specific fertiliser through the growing season. Because fruit holds well on the tree once ripe, there is no urgency to harvest the moment it colours — it can be left a little longer without losing quality, unlike many other citrus varieties.

Pruning & Common Problems

Light pruning after harvest improves airflow and light penetration. Watch for common citrus pests like aphids, leaf miner, and scale on new growth, managing outbreaks early with a neem oil spray before they spread through the canopy.

Harvest & Culinary Uses

Fruit is ready when fully orange and firm-heavy for its size. Its high juice content makes it the natural first choice for fresh-squeezed juice, though it is just as enjoyable eaten out of hand or used in marmalades and citrus-based desserts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Valencia orange considered the best juicing orange?
It combines high juice yield, a well-balanced sweet-tart flavour, and the ability to hold its quality on the tree far longer than most other varieties, all of which suit commercial and home juicing equally well.

Can Velensia Malta be eaten fresh, not just juiced?
Yes, it is a perfectly good eating orange on its own, simply better known for its juicing qualities.

How long does fruit stay good on the tree once ripe?
Considerably longer than most oranges, giving flexibility in harvest timing without a rapid drop in quality, which is part of why it became the standard variety for commercial juice production worldwide.

How soon will a grafted plant start fruiting?
Typically within 2–3 years, much sooner than a seed-grown citrus tree.

Does Velensia Malta need a lot of maintenance?
No — once established it is one of the more low-maintenance citrus varieties, needing only routine watering, an annual feed, and light pruning to stay healthy and productive.

Can Velensia Malta be grown alongside other citrus varieties?
Yes, it grows comfortably alongside other citrus and can even benefit from cross-pollination with nearby varieties, though it sets fruit reliably on its own as well, so there is no need to plant multiple trees purely for pollination purposes.

Why Choose a Grafted Velensia Malta from Green Glow Nursery
