Product Description
About the Ping Pong Longan Plant

Ping Pong Longan is a large-fruited selection of longan (Dimocarpus longan), a tree native to South China and Southeast Asia and a close relative of lychee and rambutan within the soapberry family. This particular variety is named for fruit that genuinely approaches the size of a ping pong ball — noticeably larger than the fruit of standard longan varieties, making it a favourite where size and visual impact matter alongside flavour.

Appearance & Flavour

The fruit hangs in loose clusters, each one covered in a thin, brittle, tan-brown shell that cracks open easily to reveal translucent, pearl-like flesh surrounding a single glossy black seed. The flesh is sweet, juicy, and fragrant, with a flavour often compared to a milder, more floral cousin of lychee.

Growing Conditions in India

Longan grows well across most of India’s warmer regions, wanting full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates a somewhat wider range of conditions than lychee, including slightly cooler winter nights, making it a relatively forgiving exotic to establish outside of purely tropical zones.

Planting Guide

Allow 6–8 metres of space in open ground for a mature tree, which develops a broad, dense canopy over time. Enrich the planting hole with organic matter, and stake young trees until well rooted. Container growing suits young plants for the first several years before eventual transplanting.

Watering & Feeding

Water deeply and regularly while young, then settle into watering as soil begins to dry once established. A brief dry spell ahead of flowering can actually improve fruit set, so ease back on watering mature plants heading into that season rather than keeping soil constantly moist.

Pruning & Common Problems

Light annual pruning after harvest keeps the canopy manageable and productive. Fruit bats and birds are often more of a concern than insect pests as fruit ripens, since the sweet, fragrant fruit draws plenty of attention — netting the canopy during ripening is the most effective protection.

Harvest & Culinary Uses

Fruit is ready when the thin shell turns light brown and separates easily from the flesh beneath. Eat the sweet flesh fresh straight from the shell, or use it in the same fresh and dried preparations longan is traditionally enjoyed in across South and Southeast Asian cooking, including sweet soups and preserved snacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Ping Pong Longan different from regular longan?
Its main distinction is size — the fruit grows notably larger than standard longan varieties, while retaining the same sweet, fragrant flavour the fruit is known for.

Does longan need a specific climate to fruit well?
It prefers warm conditions with a distinct cooler or drier period ahead of flowering, which helps trigger reliable fruit set the following season.

How long before a grafted longan plant fruits?
Typically within 3–4 years, compared to significantly longer for a tree grown from seed.

Can Ping Pong Longan be grown in a large pot?
Yes, for several years while young, though like most trees in this family it will eventually appreciate the room open ground provides once it reaches a productive size.

Is longan the same as lychee?
No, though they are closely related — longan has a smoother, thinner shell, smaller size, and a milder, more floral sweetness compared to the more intensely perfumed flavour of lychee — many growers enjoy keeping both in the garden side by side to appreciate the contrast between the two closely related fruits.

Why Choose a Grafted Ping Pong Longan from Green Glow Nursery

Grafting guarantees the large fruit size this variety is prized for, rather than the smaller, unpredictable fruit a seedling longan might produce. Every plant is nursery-raised and delivered across India with our standard health guarantee.
