It has become one of the more widely planted improved pomegranate varieties in India’s pomegranate-growing belts, prized for combining productivity with genuinely good eating quality.

The fruit is notably large for a pomegranate, with a deep pink-to-red rind that often develops an attractive angular shape as it matures. Inside, the arils are a rich red and distinctly softer-seeded than older desi varieties, meaning less of the hard, woody centre found in traditional pomegranate seeds. The flavour leans sweeter and milder than many older cultivars, with less of the sharp tartness some pomegranate varieties carry.
Pomegranates are naturally at home in India’s hot, semi-arid climate, and GM2 is no exception. It wants full sun and tolerates poor, rocky, and even slightly saline soils far better than most fruiting plants, actually fruiting better with a defined dry season rather than constant moisture. Good drainage matters considerably more to this plant than soil richness.
Allow around 3–4 metres of space for a mature shrub-like tree in open ground, or use a large container of at least 45–50 cm diameter with excellent drainage for terrace growing. Pomegranates tolerate being grown in relatively lean soil, so there is no need for heavily enriched planting mixes — in fact, overly rich soil can encourage leafy growth at the expense of fruiting.
Water moderately and let the soil dry out between waterings; pomegranates are genuinely drought-tolerant once established, and overwatering causes more problems — including fruit splitting — than underwatering does. Feed lightly with organic compost once or twice a year rather than heavy regular fertilising.
Prune away crowded interior growth annually to let light reach developing fruit and to reduce the humid, shaded conditions that encourage fungal problems. Fruit borer and fruit-spot fungal issues are the main concerns in humid regions; good airflow through pruning and prompt removal of any damaged fruit both help manage these.
Being grafted, GM2 begins fruiting well before a seed-grown pomegranate would. Fruit is ready when the skin turns a deep pink-red, develops a slightly leathery texture, and takes on the variety’s characteristic angular shape. Eat the arils fresh, juice them for a naturally vibrant drink, or use them in salads, garnishes, and the anardana-based preparations common in Indian cooking.
Why are GM2 pomegranate seeds softer than other varieties?
GM2 was specifically selected and developed for a softer seed coat compared to older desi pomegranate types, making the arils more pleasant to eat whole rather than needing to spit out a hard, woody centre.
Does GM2 pomegranate need a lot of water?
No — pomegranates, including GM2, are naturally drought-tolerant once established, and in fact tend to fruit better with a defined dry period rather than constant heavy watering, which can even cause the fruit to split.
Can GM2 pomegranate be grown in a pot?
Yes, it adapts well to large containers with good drainage, making it a practical option for terraces and courtyards where in-ground planting is not available — just make sure the pot has ample drainage holes and is moved to the sunniest spot the space allows.

A grafted GM2 plant reliably produces the large, soft-seeded, deep red fruit the variety is known for, rather than the unpredictable size and seed hardness a seedling pomegranate can produce. Every plant is nursery-raised and delivered across India with our standard health guarantee.
